Clean drinking water is something most of us take for granted. But what if water could be both clean and mineralized?

Dr. Pierre Kory became interested in that question after researching minerals, water chemistry and the effects of modern purification. His answer is Aurmina, a concentrated mineral solution made from volcanic biotite.

According to Aurmina, the minerals can bind with certain substances in water, causing them to form larger particles that settle to the bottom. The company calls this process flocculation.

    How Do You Use Aurmina?

The process is simple, but one step is especially important: treat the water first and filter it afterward.

For tap or well water, Aurmina currently recommends 1–2 teaspoons per gallon. Heavier water burdens may require more.

Add the minerals to a clean container, preferably glass. Stir or gently swirl the water.

Then let it sit for 24–72 hours. Kory says his household generally uses about 48 hours. Keep the treatment container uncovered and do not refrigerate it during this stage.

For reverse-osmosis or distilled water, the current Aurmina instructions call for ½–1 teaspoon per gallon and a much shorter 5–15 minute waiting period.

YOUR WATER FILTER AT HOME OR WATER BOTTLES DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH MINERALS

“JUST TELL ME WHAT TO BUY AND HOW TO SET IT UP”

    The EASY SET-UP Method

Below are three 5L “water treatment” containers with a spigot at the bottom (available at this link). The stand the containers rest on can be found at this link. Both were purchased from IKEA.

An important point about the “treatment process” is that you need more than one container. You see, the one furthest to the right is the one that has been treated with minerals the longest (shoot for 48-72 hours); thus, it has the most sediment at the bottom. The left-most one was just emptied, refilled, and treated this morning.

As you empty “the most ready/fully treated” container into our gravity-fed ceramic filter set-up (shown below), then fill it up with water, move it to the “back of the line above,” and then add Aurmina. Easy enough, no?

Now, I will introduce you to a bad-ass ceramic gravity filter system (similar to a Berkey, or you could use this water bucket filter). The one below comes from Korea and is no longer available here in the U.S, but there are many other options on Amazon or Google (or see this post doc Kory wrote, which provides links and options for treatment containers, gravity filters, etc)

    WHAT IS INSIDE?

Liquid water purification and conditioning product derived from natural ionic sulfate mineral salts extracted from volcanic biotite mica (also known as black mica or biotite mica vermiculite), an aluminosilicate rock. This is a water treatment solution to purify, remineralize, and “geologically condition” (or structure/order) water through natural mineral chemistry. Ingredients / Composition
    • Purified Water: ~97.5%
    • Ionic Sulfate Mineral Salts: ~2.5% (the active component)
These salts come from volcanic biotite mica and include a broad spectrum of minerals in ionic (charged, bioavailable) form.
    • Sulfur: 5,800 mg/L. • Iron: 792 mg/L • Magnesium: 287 mg/L
    • Potassium: 218 mg/L • Calcium: 45.0 mg/L • Phosphorus: 25.4 mg/L
    • Manganese: 14.27 mg/L • Zinc: 1.56 mg/L

It also contains up to 70–80+ trace minerals (alum, cerium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lanthanum, lithium, nickel, rubidium, scandium, selenium, silicon, strontium, titanium, vanadium, and aluminum as part of the natural aluminosilicate complex, (similar to zeolites).

What Kind of Water Dispenser Should You Use?

The best setup is a separate glass treatment container followed by a gravity-fed ceramic water filter.

Aurmina specifically recommends a 0.2-micron ceramic element made by Korea Ceramics. The company says this is the element used for its published contaminant testing.

Do not put Aurmina directly into the upper chamber of your gravity filter.

The water needs time to sit still so the floc can form and settle. Putting treated water directly into the filter can send partially formed material into the ceramic element and shorten its life.

    What Is the Brown Stuff?

This is one of the most common questions.

After treatment, you may see brown, orange, yellow or dark material at the bottom. Aurmina describes this as sediment or floc created when minerals bind with material in the water and cause it to settle. With RO or distilled water, Aurmina says iron can oxidize and create a yellow-brown residue.

    Do not drink the sediment.

Carefully pour the clear water from the top into your gravity filter, leaving the bottom sediment behind. You can also use a coffee filter for fine particles.

    Dos and Don’ts

    DO:

    • Use a clean glass pitcher, jar or container.
    • Measure the Aurmina carefully.
    • Give tap water 24–72 hours to settle.
    • Filter before drinking.
    • Keep a few treatment containers going in rotation.
    • Use the bottom spigot of the gravity filter for drinking and cooking water.

    DON’T:

    • Drink the settled sediment.
    • Add Aurmina directly to your gravity filter.
    • Shake the water aggressively after floc begins forming.
    • Assume more sediment automatically means more dangerous water.
    • Assume Aurmina removes every possible contaminant.

    Where Can You Buy Aurmina?

The current Aurmina store lists 8-ounce and 32-ounce bottles, plus larger packages and its recommended ceramic filter.

Aurmina’s published testing reports reductions in various contaminants, but the company states that real-world performance varies with the source water, dose and contact time, and that its contaminant results are water-quality testing, not health claims.
